As many of you may know by now, Project Perch is a non-profit group dedicated to the conservation of the Federally Threatened Florida burrowing owl. If you don't know what a burrowing owl is, read my previous blog post! Project Perch uses three primary methods for conserving this adorable little owl - observation, protection, and nurturing.
They observe the owls by recruiting volunteers known as "Owl Guardians". These guardians ethically watch over the owls to ensure safety and monitor for new burrows.
They protect the owls by installing fencing around existing burrows to help keep negative human interactions (like heavy mowers) away from burrow entrances. They also post educational signs to inform the public about burrowing owl protocol. They frequently use the slogan "Safe Burrows Save Owls!"
They nurture the owls by installing perches to help them spot prey or nearby predators, and by creating artificial burrows!
I'm so excited to announce that I will be traveling to the Florida Keys this October to help Project Perch members and volunteers construct artificial burrows! Burrows around the area were negatively affected by hurricane damage. The artificial burrows will not only reduce burrow collapse, but are also built on high-dry ground to hopefully reduce flooding instances!
Here is a diagram to show how effective and brilliant these artificial burrows are:
Many times, the creation of artificial burrows will eventually attract burrowing owls even if they didn't live in that particular area previously! Project Perch likes to say, "Build a burrow, grow an owl" to reflect this very instance.
I'm so excited to help Project Perch in their mission to share their passion for protecting the Florida burrowing owl! I can't wait to share my experiences with you! I also can't wait to begin my second burrowing owl painting!
As always, thank you for reading our latest news and for keeping up with Wild Planet Creations activities!
