Have you ever heard of legacy chemicals? Keep reading to find out the part Wild Planet Creations will play in a conversation that is much too silent.
2022 has been a wild (planet creations) ride so far! From new paintings, to launching a new website, advocating for justice to the Northern Rocky Mountain gray wolves, sharing about the detrimental effects of ghost fishing gear in the ocean, hosting the 30 Day Sustainability Challenge in April, and of course spreading awareness all about wildlife, wild places and conservation in a fun and interactive way, we've been busy bees! However, many of the topics we have covered so far have also been present in mainstream media.
Now that things with Wild Planet Creations have really been ramping up, I decided it's time to bring to light issues with our environment and planet that are not mentioned enough in mainstream news. Over the months of June and July, we will be focusing on pollution that we can't see. My goal with this theme is to not only shed light on issues that (quite sketchily) are being withheld from the public's eye, but to also contribute potential solutions as well as offer alternatives!
Topics I plan to cover:
- Conservation versus contamination
- Legacy chemicals - chemicals that break down very slowly over time and remain in the environment at toxic levels long after being banned
- Emerging pollutants - new chemicals that will most likely take decades for the media to bring into focus for multiple reasons
- How pollutants that may be banned in some countries are still being used in others. This affects the ecosystem globally, including animals living all the way up in the arctic!
- The harmful environmental effects of specific chemicals that have become normal for us to use (for example, road salt)
- How we as humans are a part of the food chain, which means chemicals don't just affect wildlife and the environment but also heavily affect our health and lifestyles
- Ways that scientists have contributed to "cleaning up" the chemical mess and how we can make a difference too!
I hope you're as excited as I am to learn about these topics! It's true - knowledge is definitely power and I can't wait to learn and share will all of you!
As always, thank you for reading this blog post and for supporting Wild Planet Creations! This new theme marks a new chapter for our small business, and the opportunities are limitless!
